I think the experience of having had an opportunity to avoid a catastrophe and then walking right into it is potentially much more emotionally and psychologically traumatizing than just having something happen to you that you had no warning for, and that you couldn’t have prepared for but which knocked you out — the way New Yorkers I think were traumatized by 9/11 or indeed the first wave of COVID.
