…I get a kick out of it, so I enjoy it, but I think I enjoy it because it’s not entirely accurate. It’s a Chinese view of how Western establishment people ought to be running around and talking to each other. For me, that’s fantastic. I thought it was entertaining as well. I guess the point I was going to make is that he uses shorthand and cardboard caricatures of characters much more than he’s really interested in the interiority of much of his secondary cast. I think this is related to his prose being very simple and unadorned and really just interested in the science ideas.
