…I said to put a pin in the iPhone and the downside of Microsoft becoming the enterprise juggernaut, when we were telling that story. All of the huge advantages in lock-in that Microsoft had built up, the iPhone changed that calculus because the iPhone kicked off shadow IT, bring your own device, and it kicked off the user revolt against IT. This is what this quote encapsulates. I think that’s right. I think a set of technologies were breaking through. People are just going to use those devices and that software no matter what. The era today is one where users have way more choice in what they use at work than they did in that early 2000s era, and the iPhone forced that door open. Choice and expectations of what that software and hardware is going to be like.
