…Yes, I know. I think build networks of friends and don’t rely on corporations. Do it yourself, that would be my advice. I was lucky because I was a young would-be art critic and all the jobs were taken. There were six national newspapers and they all had art critics. They were all over 60 and they’d been in their jobs for 20 years. I was lucky because a new newspaper was founded called The Independent, and they hired me to be the art critic. That’s not going to happen for most people. The BBC employed me to make art documentaries. The BBC doesn’t do that anymore. They’re not interested in culture anymore, which is weird, but they’re not. Nowadays, you’d have to do it for yourself—self-fund, self-finance, and above all, have fun. Just to plug your book again, Andrew Graham-Dixon, Vermeer: A Life Lost and Found. I like this very much, as I do all of Andrew’s other books. Last question, what will you do next? I’ve found a really interesting painting by one of the greats, and I’m writing a book about it.…
