…Most of the direct mail that comes to our house is people wanting money for free. Why should I give money to someone I don’t know, rather than money to someone I do know? If personal affiliation is a goal and trust matters, why direct mail? Well, first, I’m not an expert on direct mail, though I am lucky enough to be in the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame. They kicked me out of the Direct Marketing Association for my stance against spam a long time ago. But I guess what I would say is this: we have developed a culture where it is accepted and expected that the recipient will guard their attention and guard their pocketbook. I don’t think that that’s the only way the world could work, but it is the way our world works. I’m not saying it’s right, but it is the way it is. So, no, don’t send money to someone you don’t know. To what extent is being good at marketing the same as being good at telling very short stories?…
