…You were doing the business in the day and then writing at night? Writing at night, writing at weekends, vacations, filling up our car with books, and just immersing in it. I did not have a master plan. I really should have. It would have saved a lot of time probably. I would just immerse myself in something and get it all in my head. My mother was a painter and I would watch her sketch. That's the image I have is that I sketch it out and then I fill it out and work on it. Like a lot of people, I love to edit and polish. I love going over it and just making a sentence better and then saying how to make it better. With The Prize, one of the things is that I read the whole book aloud to myself to test every sentence.
