…Just philosophically, putting aside your theological views, but what do you think of effective altruism as a normative philosophy? That has guided, at least, some parts of AI production, right? Yes. It seems to have guided many parts of it. I think ultimately it hasn’t proved very successful in doing some of the things that it set out to do. I guess when we go back to the beginning of effective altruism, I’m unclear on how effectiveness is defined by each person that practices it in different ways. I don’t think that there’s enough conversation on what the goals really are, and it’s—and this will not surprise you—ultimately very materialistic and doesn’t account for things like the quality of relationships, depth, culture. The things that can be measured, usually with effective altruism, are often not the things that I think are most important in life. If I ask you a question like, why do men and women seem to be so far apart these days, politically and aesthetically, you think you would have a better answer to that than the effective altruists would.…
