The Koran is the first of the books to guarantee women the right to divorce, the right to own property and to be in business, and, as you can see in the Arab world, that’s the first thing that they got rid of. The way that Islam is interpreted in all of those countries really goes contrary to a lot of what the Prophet said was the way to practice Islam, and it is for that reason that it comes across so bizarrely, where people say, “Oh, we have this beautiful religion of Islam, but, yeah, we have a lot of political prisoners. Don’t worry about them.” They go hand-in-hand, and the fact that you can be unjust on that level but say that Islam is beautiful and wonderful is total hypocrisy.
