…But I’ve done it for you, you don’t have to do it. I do think I come from a different place than a lot of academics. I would say a large number of my colleagues are faculty brats. They were raised in academic households in one degree or another. I think that’s a common experience of contemporary academics. That was so entirely not where I came from. And I cherish that, I guess I do have a kind of fascination with the experience of ordinary people. The way that our contemporary politics is organized around hostility to intellectuals on the part of “the people” is something that’s familiar to me, that’s absolutely the world in which I grew up.
