…You see on TV shows, local sheriffs — a young girl disappears, they bring in a psychic. Does that happen in real life? Or it’s only on TV? I think we all know examples of that happening in real life, which is why the polls — although now we know you can’t even trust polls anymore — but many polls suggest that an extraordinary majority of Americans believe in psychic functioning. It’s why they will, on occasion, “go see a psychic,” because everybody has a story of, “So and so said this, and then it happened.” Again, a great way for me to think about belief and desire. Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a magical force that was guiding us? I think that’s why people believe in psychic functioning. Maybe the placebo effect is true.
