…How do you identify leaders who simply prevented events? There’s no great legacy to their name, but they stopped some very bad or maybe very good things from happening. They’re just a footnote to history, but they mattered a great deal. Leaders who prevented events. One can say that Winston Churchill prevented events. He prevented the conquest of England by Hitler. He then joined with Roosevelt to overcome Hitler. Other leaders who prevented events. Most of the leaders that we think of are the leaders who did things rather than prevented things from happening. We undervalue the preventers. Churchill was very active. He both did things and prevented things. Maybe Khrushchev prevented World War III. We don’t quite ever see that in the data in any obvious way, but he might have been extraordinarily consequential.…
