Transcript context

…If you had to explain, what is it about the music of Bach that you still do not understand, what would that be? Bach’s music has always some kind of puzzles and enigma, so that you can never get an answer to all those unknown aspects of Bach. For example, Kunst der Fuge, the Art of Fugue — we don’t know why he has really written it or in what kind of situation. It was not finished. In the cantatas, for example, there are plenty of really places where it’s difficult to understand why he did something in this way and so on. In most of the cases, we can find some answers from the text, but still, it is not so easy to understand everything. And that was very good. How good a sense of the grasp of Bach’s mind do you feel you have? Or is he just a complete mystery to you?…
