…I’ll again mention your forthcoming book, The Rise and Fall of the East: Examination, Autocracy, Stability, and Technology, which I found one of the most interesting books on China. To close, just tell us, what do you plan to do next? I am collaborating with a number of professors — and some of them are based in China — on a book project looking at the history of Chinese technology, using the dataset that I already used for this forthcoming book. But we are going to devote the entire book to this topic. The title of the book is The Needham Question. Joseph Needham famously asked the question in 1969, how come China failed to take off and have its own industrial revolution, even though it had a very advanced technology, very advanced signs? We’re trying to answer that question using the database that we have constructed. I just learned from the Princeton University Press that they’re going to award a contract to us, and we already have three chapters finished. We hope to finish the book by the end of this year.
