…Intellectually, the different parts of New York you lived in growing up — how did that shape your views intellectually? You moved from Queens to Park Slope, right? I was in Brooklyn for all my childhood, in Park Slope for part of it and a place called Flatlands for the rest of it. Since adulthood, I’ve basically lived in Manhattan. One thing I’d say is just an appreciation for pluralism that is still a part of my work, I think comes from going to school on the Upper East Side and laying my head an hour and a half away from that, across lots of different communities, lots of different neighborhoods, and learning to appreciate human diversity, learning to get used to it. The ways in which my high school community was very different from my family and seeing the value in each of those communities, I think was a very important part of formulating my values, so that I could never labor under the fiction that there is any one value that we all pursue.
