…Why is that a stronger skew in the English-language world? I’m not sure. It’s very striking that there’s been a translation of the Odyssey by a woman into French since the 18th century. There were several by women into Italian. There’s one by a woman into Turkish. I think the whole culture of translation is different in European countries to what it is in the States. Do you think women translators have a higher relative standing when translation is less professionalized, less bureaucratized? It’s something you just do? Whereas when we conduct it through academia, maybe that puts women translators at a disadvantage?…
