To be honest, I was pretty unsophisticated in that way, in that I thought that I was getting deeper into culture by pursuing what I was already into. I would see a movie like Run Lola Run, and I would think, “Oh, now I’m understanding this thing.” But I was just seeing one part of it. There’s a bunch of stuff I could make up, but I think, in reality, my interests are domestic. They really are. There are tons of bands I like from Britain, but that somehow didn’t seem in any way separate from US culture. Like the Beatles seem like part of American culture.
